We’re pleased to announce that three of the FSTS team are going to be presenting at the Joint Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Society for Classical Studies this January in Toronto! Jaymie Orchard, Chloe Martin, and Siena Hutton are presenting their joint paper “A Blast from the Past: Digital Antiquity in the Classroom” at the Undergraduate Paper Session on Saturday, January 7th. They’ll be talking about the teaching modules they worked on this summer, and making a strong case for using ancient cultural material (digital or otherwise!) in classrooms to help students connect with the past in a way that lectures and notes simply can’t convey.
Since we can’t send them off into the wilds of Toronto in January without any support, we’re running a fundraiser to help cover their accommodation costs. The design is based on one of the seal impressions from our Blackmore collection. It features two figures drinking beer with straws (they made very sediment-y beer back then….) and Kat came up with what we think is the most accurate description of the 3 fields of classical archaeology for the back:
From now until November 13th, you can order a mug, t-shirt, tank top, or sweatshirt and the proceeds will go towards Jaymie, Chloe & Siena’s hotel costs. We need to sell between 65 and 70 items to make this happen, but this year’s fundraising shirt is so delightful, I don’t think we’ll have any trouble. Thanks as ever for your support, and we hope to see you at the AIA!
